Privacy Policy

Last updated: April 17, 2026

SolarCalc (solar-calc.lifeofabit.com) is operated by Life of a Bit. This site provides educational solar savings calculators and related homeowner information. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, what information we may collect when a calculator submission or lead handoff is added in the future, how we use that information, how long we keep it, and how you can exercise your choices. This policy is written to cover the site as it exists today and foreseeable calculator-related workflows that may be introduced later. Where a feature has not yet been launched, we use conditional language such as may collect and when you submit the calculator so we do not imply collection before it actually happens.

By using the site, you agree to the practices described here. If you do not agree, do not use the site.

1. Information We Collect Today

a. Analytics data

We use Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to understand how visitors find and use SolarCalc. GA4 may collect information such as pages viewed, approximate city or region derived from IP address, device and browser type, referring source, engagement events, and similar aggregate usage information. GA4 uses cookies and similar technologies for this purpose. We use analytics to understand which pages are useful, where visitors drop off, and whether site changes improve usability.

GA4 data is processed by Google subject to Google's own privacy terms. You can learn more at policies.google.com/privacy.

b. Infrastructure and security logs

SolarCalc is delivered through Amazon Web Services infrastructure, including Amazon S3 and CloudFront. Those systems automatically create technical logs that may include IP address, request URL, request method, user-agent string, response code, timestamp, and response size. We use these logs for security monitoring, abuse prevention, troubleshooting, performance analysis, and operational reliability. We do not use infrastructure logs to build advertising profiles.

c. Email communications

If you contact us using the email address listed on the Contact page, we receive the information you choose to include in your message. That may include your name, email address, the contents of your request, and any attachments you send. We use that information only to respond, investigate issues, or maintain basic business records.

2. Information We May Collect When Calculator Submission or Lead Features Launch

SolarCalc does not currently promise or require a lead form in order to use the public educational calculator. However, if we later add a quote request or partner handoff workflow, then when you submit the calculator or a related lead form we may collect the information you voluntarily provide, including your name, email address, typed phone number, ZIP code, street address, city, state, homeownership details, electric bill range, roof or property details, and any freeform notes you choose to submit.

If that future workflow is enabled, some or all of that information may be shared with licensed solar installers and solar marketplace partners, including EnergySage and SolarReviews, so they can evaluate your request and contact you with solar quotes, consultations, financing options, battery offers, or related home-electrification services. We may also store consent-record details associated with that submission, including the exact disclosure text shown at the time of submission, the typed phone number, timestamp, page URL, request metadata, and opt-in status. We include this language now because partner applications often require clear advance disclosure of possible lead-data handling.

3. How We Use Information

We use collected or future-collected information to:

We do not sell personal information for unrelated third-party advertising. If we share future lead-submission data, it will be for the purpose you requested: obtaining solar-related contact or estimates.

4. Cookies and Similar Technologies

We currently use cookies primarily for analytics. We do not currently represent that we use session replay, heatmap tools, or retargeting pixels on SolarCalc. If advertising or additional tracking tools are added later, this policy will be updated before or when those tools launch.

Cookie name Purpose Typical duration
_ga Google Analytics visitor distinction Up to 2 years
_ga_[property-id] Google Analytics session and engagement measurement Up to 2 years

You can limit cookies through your browser settings, private browsing mode, or the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

5. Affiliate and Lead-Generation Relationships

SolarCalc may monetize through affiliate links, advertising, and future lead-generation arrangements. If you click a commercial link and visit a third-party site, that site controls its own privacy practices. If a future quote-request or handoff form is launched, we may share the information you submit with partner networks and participating installers as described above. Those partners may have separate privacy policies and communications practices, and you should review them before submitting information.

Current and prospective partner categories include solar marketplaces, installer networks, financing providers, battery or energy-upgrade services, and affiliate platforms that track referred conversions. Our Affiliate Disclosure explains how those commercial relationships fund the site.

6. Data Retention

We keep information only as long as reasonably necessary for the purpose it was collected, unless a longer retention period is required by law, security needs, dispute resolution, or tax/accounting obligations. Our current retention expectations are:

7. Your Choices and Opt-Out Methods

You may opt out of analytics cookies using browser settings or Google's tools described above. If a future lead workflow is launched and you no longer want marketing texts, you may opt out by replying STOP to any text message. If you want us to stop sharing future submissions, request deletion of stored lead data, or remove you from our own records where legally permitted, email contact@lifeofabit.com with enough detail for us to identify the request. If a partner network or installer already received your submission, you may also need to opt out directly with that partner.

If you do not want your contact information shared with installers or partner marketplaces, do not submit a future quote-request or lead-handoff form if and when one is introduced.

8. Legal Bases and Privacy Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or limit the use of personal information we hold about you. California residents may have rights under the CCPA/CPRA. Residents of the EEA or UK may have rights under GDPR or related law. Our legal bases may include consent, legitimate interests in running and securing the site, and compliance with legal obligations.

To make a privacy request, email contact@lifeofabit.com with the subject line Privacy Request. We may need to verify your identity before acting on your request.

9. Children's Privacy

SolarCalc is intended for homeowners and adults evaluating solar economics. It is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information to us, contact us and we will investigate and delete it where appropriate.

10. Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards appropriate to the size and scope of this site. That said, no website, email system, or cloud platform can guarantee absolute security. You should avoid sending sensitive information that is not necessary for your inquiry.

11. Third-Party Links

SolarCalc links to outside resources, including NREL PVWatts, URDB, utility pages, government resources, and commercial partners. We are not responsible for the privacy or security practices of those external sites. Review their policies before sharing information.

12. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy as the site evolves, including if a lead form, ad platform, or additional analytics tooling is added. When we make material changes, we will revise the Last updated date on this page. Continued use of the site after changes become effective means you accept the revised policy.
